UnderPlate Install Guide

IG UFH 20

Before Starting

As OMNIE continues to develop and improve product information and instructions it is recommended you check the OMNIE website (www.omnie.co.uk) for the latest Datasheets & Install Guides that may have been superseded post delivery of your system.

STORAGE
If it is necessary to store the system once you have taken delivery, ensure it is kept in the following conditions:

  • A dry, weather tight area
  • Out of direct sunlight
  • Away from sharp objects or chemical spillages

Please read all stages of this install guide before proceeding with the installation.

Always refer to your floor finish manufacturers install instructions, they may have special requirements which take precedent when installing underfloor heating.

SAFETY
Always follow all site safety precautions, and follow all safety instructions and when using power tools.

When working with any wood or insulation based products, dust and particles can become airborne and pose a hazard to health. This is particularly relevant when machining, cutting or routing. Please follow all the relevant guidelines on reducing the risk of dust inhalation.

PREPARATION

Underside of floor is clean free of debris/surface dust and any protruding objects.

Items Not Supplied

  • Panel Fixings
  • Mineral Wool Insulation
  • Insulation Fixings
  • Pipe Conduit

Note
If OMNIE UnderPlate is installed to an existing floor deck with floor finish in place you must always consider this when screwing or nailing from below, also if the deck includes any acoustic layers this will affect the system performance.

Stage 1

Following your OMNIE CAD design to determine the area that requires UnderPlate panels, note where pipe flow and return runs are… i.e. anywhere pipes needs to exit a panel.

UnderPlate Panels can be fixed using suitable screws, nails or staples, they must not protrude through the floor deck or distort the UnderPlate and are sufficient to secure and the UnderPlates flat to the underside of the floor deck, ensuring the UnderPlate gets maximum contact to the underside of the floor.

STAGE 2

Once the panel location has been determined the UnderPlates can now be fixed in place, again following the CAD design, noting where a loop pipe end occurs, locate the panel so the pipe can exit the panel and return unhindered and remain flat to the underside of the floor.

stage 2A

UnderPlate Panels are best cut on a solid bench using a hand style hacksaw to avoid distortion of the panel, once cut remove any burs that may damage the pipework.

Stage 3

Installing the Pipe

There are three general joist types

  • Posi-Joist (top and bottom flange connected by metal webs either side)
  • TJI-Joists (top and bottom flange connected by a central timber web)
  • Solid Timber Joists

Posi-Joist
Posi joist top and bottom flanges may vary in size and depth, it is important they are not cut or dried as this will impair the structural integrity of the joist, when passing pipe through webbed posi joist care must be taken not to damage the pipe on sharp edges and a suitable pipe conduit should be used where pipe is in contact with any webs.

TJI-Joists
TJI joist top and bottom flanges may vary in size and depth, it is important they are not cut or dried as this will impair the structural integrity of the joist, some TJI joists have knock out plugs for access, any holes drilled must be done following joist manufactures guidelines.

Solid Timber Joists
For the the solid timber joists pipe access holes/notches will need to be made to allow the pipe to run to each joist bay, see guide diagram.

The only other joist/truss scenario is the preformed roof truss which again should not be drilled or notched unless allowed by specific instruction from the truss manufacturer. pipe must be routed under and battens added for the ceiling installation.

Stage 4

With all the UnderPlates in place and joist bay access done pipe can be carefully fed into place following the CAD plans.

The minimum temperature for installing the pipe should be +5°C.

NOTE: If the pipe work is kinked during the installation, the coil must be replaced or the pipe repaired with an OMNIE connector (if possible) and then pressure tested. No connections should be made unless fully accessible following the completion of the finished floor.

stage 5

Once the panels and pipe have been installed, the circuits should be hydraulically pressure tested and kept under pressure while the floor finishes are laid.

A QUICK GUIDE TO FILLING THE SYSTEM

1. If the manifold is being used to pressure test all circuits at once, close both primary isolation valves.

2. Connect a pressure tester to the drain valve, vent the system of air and increase the pressure to 6 bar.

3. Once at this pressure, leave for 60 minutes. If the pressure has dropped examine the pipework. It may be necessary to pressure test individual circuits to determine if there has been damage to the pipe.

4. If the pressure is maintained and passes the test, record the results on the pressure test certificate. Have the test witnessed and certified by a third party.

5. Maintain this test pressure whilst the floor finish and/or covering ply (or similar) is being laid.
