Underfloor Heating and Your Home – Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve put together a list of some of the most common questions homeowners have about underfloor heating to help you decide whether it is the best heating option for you.

What is ‘wet’ underfloor heating?

Underfloor heating works on the principle that heat rises and therefore is installed below the floor so that heat is transmitted up into the room. ‘Wet’ underfloor heating is where pipes are installed below the floor and warm water is pumped through them to produce heat.

What flooring can be used with underfloor heating?

Due to advances in the underfloor heating industry, systems are now suitable to be laid with most floor coverings. We typically recommend tiles as being the most suitable floor covering due to their heat conductivity, however wood, vinyl and carpet with a low tog are also able to be used.

Can underfloor heating be retrofitted?

Yes. Underfloor heating is not just suitable for new builds but there are also systems that can be fit in an existing home with minimal fuss.

Can I install underfloor heating throughout my home?

Yes, underfloor heating can be installed both upstairs and downstairs with different systems being suitable for each. Our acoustic systems are perfect for upper floors as they minimise noise travelling through the property.

Can I install underfloor heating in just one part of my home?

Yes, you can choose which areas you want underfloor heating installed in, for example extensions, bathrooms or just your main living areas.

Is underfloor heating expensive?

Although the initial installation can be fairly expensive, installing underfloor heating is still a cost-effective way of heating your home. This is because underfloor heating runs on lower temperatures than other heating systems meaning less energy is consumed and bills are likely to be lower.

Is underfloor heating visible?

No, the system is installed beneath your floor so it cannot be seen and doesn’t take up any space like radiators do. This gives you much more freedom to arrange your furniture the way you want and achieve the right interior design for you.

Can I control my underfloor heating using my phone?

Yes, with OMNIE systems you can control your underfloor heating using an app on your phone. This means you can set it to come on whilst you’re on your way home so you can return to a warm house.
